The renovation of an existing home on the Connecticut shore line presented some unique challenges. First the restoration of an existing building built in the 1920’s to accommodate parties from New York City. Secondly the addition of a garage, pool, contemporary kitchen, and living space. Our goal was to maintain the historic nature of the existing brick structure while finding a clear and direct way of adding the modernist wing.
Our intervention occurs in the old servants wing, through the removal of the ground floor program which was formally a kitchen and service space and threading in our contemporary structure. This required some structural shoring, but in the end provided us with a clean and direct layout overlooking the sound. The front portion of the new addition contains a two car garage and storage space, while the rear yard portion contains a open kitchen and ample living room. Towards the side setback we introduced a new pool and cabana. On the sound side we then introduced a bedroom that sits upon our new volume but is still discretely tucked under the existing structures roof, giving ample views to the surrounding water.
The older portion of the home was updated with a new slate roof, flooring, and contemporary detailing throughout, such as steel fireplaces, and new windows. The main living spaces were also brought up to contemporary standards and all bathrooms were also renovated. Dormers were added to the sound side of the building, increasing the living space and giving views to new guest rooms. The finishing result reflects how contemporary architecture and traditional can be blended in a sensitive and complementary way.
